The removal of excess fat, loose skin and tightening of muscles in the abdominal area through plastic surgery is called a tummy tuck. While the procedure usually involves the area of the lower abdomen, it can extend around the sides to the back and from rib cage down. It is not a substitute for weight loss, but rather a means to tighten up the skin and reshape the contours of the body after one has lost weight or has stabilized after other body changes, such as pregnancies, prior surgeries, weight fluctuations or inherited characteristics. The goal is to flatten the abdomen, improve weakened muscles and, in turn, enhance your self confidence.

About the Procedure
As all individuals are different, the procedure will need to be customized to your particular body based on your history and the extent of the area involved. In general, an incision is made between the pubic area and the navel to remove fat deposits and to reattach muscles. The location and length of incisions will also be based on surgical judgment, and when possible, your preferences. There will be swelling after surgery and some drainage is normal. You should be back to your normal routine in about two weeks.

Considerations
• You may wish to postpone a tummy tuck if you plan to have more pregnancies or if you think you may have major fluctuations in your weight.
• Candidates for this procedure should be moderately fit and, in general, have good muscle tone. They should have a positive outlook, be non-smokers, and not have any conditions that could limit healing.
